Funny, witty, and sometimes reminiscent of "Groundhog Day" is how I would describe "Quantum Love Story" by Mike Chen. It took me a while to figure out how the novel fit into the "time-travel" genre because it appeared to be about the same couple of weeks repeating, but isn't that a kind of time travel? The two main characters were very well fleshed out by repeating their daily lives and habits. The reinforcement of their daily routine helped us get to know them to the point where when something went missing, like a phone call, you knew something very wrong was at stake.

Chen mentioned this was his first attempt at a love story, and he did it well. He was able to balance a character-driven love story with thought-provoking themes about time and identity and throw in enough science (but not too much) to keep even the most geeky science nerds engaged. The novel's blend of humor and emotional depth was particularly well done. I highlighted multiple passages that offered insightful reflections on life, love, time, and relationships. It was such a delightful take on the time loop/time-travel story. The addition of Buddy Ed, the dog, without a doubt, made the book for me.

Once again, this one book hit multiple genres for me. I guess I'm a sucker for the techie, the speculative, and the romantic. Blend the complicated human condition with a bit of the other-worldly and do it well, and I'll be your biggest fan. Thank you, Mike Chen.
